History

Pleasant Hill Baptist Church
Haymakertown, Virginia
Established in 1858
Pleasant Hill Baptist Church was founded in 1858 on land donated by Moses Watkins at Pleasant Hill in Botetourt County. The original church was located about five miles from the current site. The first minutes available, dated September 9, 1876 indicate 120 members with 80 cents in contributions.
Due to the great distance that many members had to travel, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church began meeting with the Methodist Episcopal church at their new new church in Haymakertown in 1877.
On the 20th of June 1896, the church approved a motion to begin work on a new building at the present site. The new building was dedicated in December 1897.
In March 1954, a wing was added to the original building to provide additional sanctuary space, a baptistry, eight Sunday School classrooms and a full basement, complete with kitchen and restrooms.
A major building addition was completed in August 2002 and was soon followed by a complete renovation of the older building. These projects provided a new sanctuary, Sunday School classrooms, church offices, fellowship hall, kitchen and nursery. In the new sanctuary, a large stained glass window with Jesus and the lambs is behind the pulpit. The rest of the stained glass windows in the sanctuary tell the story of Jesus from His birth to His resurrection and ascension into Heaven. Approximately 350 people worship at Pleasant Hill with an average attendance of 175.
Pleasant Hill had been blessed with a number of Godly men to serve as our pastors. There is a great deal more to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church than a simple history of the facilities. Pleasant Hill is characterized as a very friendly and loving congregation that is dedicated to serving our Lord.
